On 30 October, Sweden recognized Palestine as a state. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman criticized the move, saying, “the Swedish government should understand that Middle East relations are more complex than a piece of self-assembled IKEA furniture” (Reuters). His Swedish counterpart, Margot Wallstrom, replied in kind. “I will be happy to send Israel FM Lieberman an IKEA flat pack to assemble,” she said. “He’ll see it requires a partner, cooperation, and a good manual” (NPR).
Lebanese blogger Karl Sharro (@KarlreMarks) satirized the exchange that same day on Twitter, illustrating the Israeli occupation as one of the Swedish furniture company’s instruction guides. His illustration, presented above, was retweeted over a thousand times.
